The Best Time to Visit Harringworth

Harringworth is lovely to visit all year around with a different landscape with the seasons but early summer is particularly beautiful. The village is filled with beautiful flowers and foliage. There are some great walks around the village which would best be enjoyed in the warm summer months and the village. pub, Spokes cafe is a great place to grab a coffee and they do some very delicious sweet and savoury treats.

Harringworth is pretty small, and you can walk around it very easily in no time at all. There are also many walks around the village to admire the surrounding countryside and you can head to the famous reservoir known and Rutland Water or even Deene Park.

The Best of Harringworth Village

Welland Valley Viaduct

The single most striking feature when you visit Harringworth is the Viaduct. It stretched nearly three quarter of a mile and has 82 arches, measuring 70 feet high. It was built in the times of the steam train to carry the former Midland railway across the picturesque Welland valley and he enchanting waters and meadows of the River Welland.

Harringworth was recorded in the Doomsday Book however it was known as Harringeworde back then and the Manor of Harringworth was owned by William de Cantelope.

The Manor House

In the late 13^th century the manor was passed to the La Zouche family who eventually sold it to Francis Foxley and upon his death the Manor of Harringworth was sold to Moses Tyron who lived there until he passed in 1652.

By the mid 18^th century, no one was prepared to take on the manor and it was sadly demolished due to its bad state, but for the fishpond. It is believed that manor cottages may have a part of the original manor.

Today Harringworth’s Manor house dates back from the 17^th century and is a stunning seven bedroom Grade II listed property, made from local limestone and stone mullion windows. A stunning French-styled fountain sits in the entrance and looks like a property that wouldn’t look out of place in the Provence lavender searching fields!

The Church

In the 13^th century, the Norman church of St. John the Baptist was said to be one of the largest churches in the county, which was later topped with a broach spire in the 14^th century.

If you love the sheer architecture of churches, then a wander around St John the Baptist is a must! Many of it’s features are Romanesque, with stunning windows, treasures and sits in a peaceful area of the village surrounded by tombs and graves and towards the back of the Churchland there is also a memorial worth a visit.

The Harringworth Cross

Walking into the village there are many fine examples of limestone buildings and thatched cottages with the Harringworth Cross standing tall amongst the village finery.

The White Swan

The local watering hole, The White Swan, dates back to the 16^th century and is a former coaching Inn donning many original features.
